ICAN Lekki and District Society Team Visits Top Lagos Government Officials, Seeks Collaboration

Members of the Lekki and Districts Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN-LEDS), led by its newly elected chairman, Olufunmilayo Olaniyi, the Senior Vice President, Business Development at Flutterwave, paid a courtesy visit to top officials of the Lagos State Government. The visit was part of ICAN-LEDS’ thank-you tour to organisations and government agencies that supported the district during its investiture ceremony and the district anniversary on June 8, 2024. Not only that, the district also intends to explore potential areas of collaboration between the district and the Lagos State Government.

According to a statement released by the District General Secretary, Mr. Adeyemi Adediran, a partner with Andersen, he identified areas of collaboration, which include joint corporate social responsibility initiatives, technical support, and thought leadership. In a bid to enhance the operations of the district, the team led by Olufunmilayo Olaniyi equally shared their goals and aspirations, including top priorities such as acquiring an office building and a bus for group transportation to events. In addition, the Lagos State Government officials visited by the district representatives include the state’s accountant-general, Dr. Abiodun Muritala, FCA, Ph.D.; the special adviser to the governor on taxation and revenue, Mr. Opeyemi Ogungbo; and the chairman of the Lagos State Universal Education Board, Dr. Shittu Hakeem, who pledged their support for the developmental initiatives of the districts and promised to encourage some of their colleagues to join ICAN-LEDS.
In his remarks, the Accountant-General of Lagos State noted that the Catch Them Young initiative of the Institute has inspired countless youths to aspire and eventually become Chartered Accountants, and he expressed his willingness to facilitate the district’s technical sessions, trainings, and webinars aimed at enlightening the members of the Institute and Nigerians at large.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue highlighted the various efforts of the government towards building a resilient Lagos economy, which will be driven by the sufficiency of the revenue generated in the state through a robust and efficient taxation policy. He stated that one of the ambitions of the government is to educate the citizens and build the consciousness of paying tax as a fundamental obligation of every taxable person and entity through the establishment of tax clubs, which will enable many schools in Lagos State to participate in the initiative.

He tasked the district with collaborating with the state to educate the people and also advocate for the importance of prompt payment of taxes, especially the land use charge.
The Chairman of Lagos SUBEB also expressed his readiness to partner with the district to bring the value of the accounting profession to the awareness of every student and school in the state.
ICAN Lekki and District Society is one of the district societies that make up the 71 district societies and chapters of ICAN. The district mission is to be the number one district of choice for members of the institute, to advocate and uphold the integrity and ethical standards of the profession as enshrined in the extant laws of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, and to promote the technical competence of the district members to the benefit of the accounting profession and the public interest. Olufunmilayo Olaniyi, the newly elected third chairman of the district, has hit the ground running a few weeks into her tenure, as this is the first in the series of many visitations and social activities lined up in the 2024–25 chairmanship year aimed at growing the district and the development of the members.
