Today is a special day for one of Nigeria’s most famous leaders, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1985 to 1993, better known as IBB. The former Nigeria military leader who relinquished power in 1993 hasn’t lost his mojo. At 83, IBB is still a force to reckon with in the Nigerian political landscape. He has aged quite well, too. Come August 17th, 2024, the influential former military president will clock 83 in fine style. His Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, will, on Saturday, August 17th, 2024, play host to top dignitaries from all walks of life in honour of his 83th birthday. At 83, IBB etched his name into history books as one of the most visionary leaders Nigeria has ever seen. Despite his flaws, no one can deny his remarkable contributions to the development of Nigeria as a nation. Hailed as an outstanding officer, the former military leader is regarded by many as the architect of the modern Abuja city. Over three decades ago after he left power, IBB’s iconic projects are still visible in the nation’s capital city, Abuja. Described as a visionary leader, IBB spearheads most of the legacy projects domiciled in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It was under his leadership the capital of Nigeria was moved from Lagos to Abuja, the FCT. And in Nigeria today, Abuja remains one of the most well-planned capital cities in Africa. Thanks to IBB’s vision, Abuja has become the most powerful city in Nigeria – the city of political power. Some of the notable achievements recorded by the IBB administration include the construction of Nigeria’s Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, ECOWAS Headquarters Secretariat, Kano-Abuja dual carriageway, International Conference Centre and many more. He literally built the foundation for what is known today as Nigeria’s capital city.
In addition, IBB extended its infrastructure development projects to other parts of the country. In Lagos, he completed the Third Mainland Bridge. Outside of Lagos, he built the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station, the Toja Bridge in Kebbi and the Jibia Water Treatment plant. Also, he decentralized power by creating new states, thereby opening up more economic prosperity across the country. The former leader’s intention was to bring the government closer to the people at the grassroots. Today, IBB is right. The creation of the new states has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic prosperity. The following states – Yobe, Kastina, Taraba, Jigawa, Kebbi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Osun, Ekiti and Akwa Ibom owe their existence to IBB visionary leadership. The retired general, who is quietly enjoying his old age in Minna, is surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Despite his low profile, IBB is still as influential as ever. His Hilltop residence is a destination of choice for top politicians and high-profile businessmen seeking one intervention or favour.
