Dr. Abike Dabiri Strides At Diaspora Day

Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), is one of the few shining lights in the Nigerian political landscape. She is synonymous with excellence. Excellence is her middle name. And this is not overhyped one bit. From her days at the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA Newsline, to the House of Representatives, the Lagos-born prominent female political figure has covered herself in glory. She has brought her spirit of excellence to NiDCOM, the sole government agency for the Diaspora. Since her appointment as NiDCOM Chairman, Dr. Dabiri-Erewa has been at the forefront of activities and programmes aimed at making life better for over 20 million Nigerians living in the diaspora. Known for her passionate approach to issues, she has used her office to rescue hundreds of her compatriots facing diverse issues ranging from racism to immigration, deportation, and diplomatic conflicts.

In continuation of her commendable strides, the Dabiri-Erewa-led agency, NiDCOM, held this year’s edition of the annual National Diaspora Day Celebrations at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, in Abuja. The National Diaspora Day Celebrations, a Federal Government initiative, are designed to bring together Nigerians from all corners of the world to discuss and address the impact of migration trends on national growth and development. Not only that, the event also featured the Diaspora Merit Awards designed to appreciate outstanding Nigerians in the Diaspora. The event, which attracted top government officials and Nigerians living in Diaspora, was themed “Japa Phenomeon and its Implications for National Development.” Various speakers, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who was represented by Senator Sani Bello, lamented the growing trend of “Japa” among the young people and appealed to Nigerians to return home and join the government in the Rebuilding Hope Agenda of the President Bola Tinubu administration. In her own words, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Dr. Dabiri-Erewa, said, “Since its establishment five years ago, NiDCOM has had so much to celebrate. This is because the passion and consistency that led to the establishment of the commission have been well sustained by the legacy team that built it. She continued, “Some of the programmes and activities of NiDCOM include: National Diaspora Day Celebrations; NiDCOM successfully hosted the annual National Diaspora Day Celebrations on July 25 and 26, 2023.” This was the 17th edition and the 5th to be held by NiDCOM. It is an event to recognise and celebrate over 20 million Nigerians living in the diaspora.” She concluded. This year’s event was graced by prominent personalities, including Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and others.
